Types of smart and keyless locks we install
Smart deadbolts
These replace your existing deadbolt and connect to your phone by Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. You can lock and unlock remotely, see who came and went, and create or delete access for other people.
Keypad locks
A keypad lock opens with a code and needs no phone or internet. It is a simple, reliable choice for rentals, back doors and anyone who just wants to stop carrying a key.
Retrofit smart locks
A retrofit unit fits over the inside of your existing deadbolt and leaves the outside unchanged. It suits renters and historic doors where the exterior hardware should stay as it is.
Electronic locks for offices
For a small office or suite, a commercial-grade keypad or electronic lever lets you give each employee a code and remove it when they leave. Larger buildings may need a full access control system, covered on our commercial locksmith page.
Why professional installation matters
A smart lock uses a small motor to throw the bolt. If the bolt rubs on the strike plate, the motor strains, the batteries drain in weeks and the lock eventually reports a jam and leaves the door unlocked.
Before fitting anything we check that the deadbolt slides freely with the door closed. If it does not, we adjust the strike, the bolt hole or the door first. That one step prevents most smart lock complaints.
We also check the things that decide whether a given lock will fit: door thickness, backset, the size of the existing holes and how much clearance there is to the frame or a storm door.
Smart lock setup
Installation is only half the job. Before we leave, we:
- Calibrate the lock so it knows the locked and unlocked positions.
- Help you create your main code and add users.
- Pair the lock with its app on your phone if it has one.
- Show you the backup way in: the key, or the emergency power contacts.
- Rekey the key cylinder, if the lock has one, so earlier keys do not work.
Connecting the lock to a wider smart home system depends on your own hub and Wi-Fi. We get the lock itself working and paired with its own app.
Choosing a smart lock for a DC home
A few things worth thinking about before you buy:
- Keep a key override. Batteries die and apps fail. A lock with a physical key gives you a way in.
- Renters: ask your landlord first. A retrofit lock that leaves the outside untouched is usually the easiest to get approved.
- Condos: some buildings restrict changes to the hallway side of the door. Check the rules.
- Short-term rentals: pick a lock that lets you set codes that expire.
- Grade: a smart lock is still a deadbolt. Look for a solid security grade, not just a long feature list.
Already own the lock? We will install it. Not sure which to buy? Call us with a photo of your door edge and we will tell you what fits.

Smart lock installation FAQs
Can you install a smart lock I bought online?
Yes. Tell us the brand and model and we will confirm it suits your door. We install customer-supplied locks regularly.
Will a smart lock fit my old door?
Usually, though older DC doors often need the bolt hole or strike adjusted, and doors with mortise locks need a different approach. We check the door before recommending a lock.
What happens when the batteries die?
Most smart locks warn you for weeks beforehand. If they do run out, you use the physical key, or the emergency power contacts on models that have them.
Do smart locks need Wi-Fi?
No. Keypad and Bluetooth locks work without it. Wi-Fi is only needed for remote control and alerts when you are away from home.
Are smart locks as secure as regular deadbolts?
A well-made smart deadbolt is as strong physically as a standard deadbolt of the same grade. Use a strong code, keep the app updated and avoid the cheapest unbranded models.
Can a smart lock be rekeyed?
If it has a key cylinder, yes. We can match it to your other doors during the install. See our lock rekey service.
