Key will not turn in the ignition in Washington, DC? An ignition rarely fails all at once. First the key needs a wiggle. Then it sticks now and then. Then one day it will not turn at all, usually when you are already late.

Mr. Locksmith DC repairs and replaces ignitions across Washington, DC. We work on the lock side of the ignition, which is where most of these problems start, and we do it where the car sits.

Signs your ignition needs attention

  • The key goes in but will not turn, or only turns after jiggling.
  • The key is stuck and will not come out.
  • The key turns but feels loose or gritty.
  • The key is hard to insert or only goes in part of the way.
  • A key has snapped off in the ignition.

Any of these will get worse. Forcing the key is what usually turns a repair into a replacement, or breaks the key off inside.

Try these two things first

Steering lock. If the wheel was turned after the engine was switched off, the steering lock can bind the ignition. Turn the wheel firmly left and right while turning the key gently.

Gear selector. An automatic will not release or start unless it is fully in Park. Press the brake and move the shifter out of Park and back.

If neither helps, stop there and call. More force will not fix it.

Ignition repair

Inside the ignition cylinder is a row of small wafers that match your key. Over years they wear, bend or stick, and the cylinder stops recognizing the key.

On many vehicles we can take the cylinder apart, replace the worn wafers and clean it so your existing key works smoothly again. That is the cheaper outcome, and it means you keep one key for the doors and the ignition.

Sometimes the real culprit is the key. A badly worn key will not lift the wafers properly. In that case we cut a fresh key to the original code rather than copying the worn one.

Ignition replacement

When the cylinder is too worn or has been damaged, for example after an attempted theft, we replace it. Where the vehicle allows, we key the new cylinder to match your existing key so you do not end up carrying two.

If the car uses a transponder key, the new parts also have to be accepted by the immobilizer. We handle that programming as part of the job.

Broken or stuck key in the ignition

A key that has snapped in the ignition can almost always be removed without replacing the cylinder, as long as nobody has pushed it deeper with another key or a tool.

We extract the broken piece, check why it broke and cut a new key. If the key broke because the ignition was seizing, we will show you and fix the cause.

When it is not the lock

If the key turns normally but nothing happens, or the dash lights up and the engine does not crank, the fault is probably electrical: the battery, the starter or the ignition switch behind the cylinder. That is work for a mechanic.

On push-to-start cars there is no key cylinder at all. A no-start there is often the fob. See key fob replacement and programming.

Tell us the symptoms when you call. If it does not sound like a job for a locksmith, we will say so before you pay for a visit.

What ignition repair costs

The price depends on the vehicle and on whether the cylinder can be repaired or has to be replaced. Repairs cost less than replacements, and vehicles with transponder systems cost more because of the programming.

We quote by phone once we know the year, make, model and symptoms, and confirm the price at the car before starting. General starting prices are on our price list.

Ignition repair FAQs

Why will my key not turn in the ignition?

The most common causes are a bound steering lock, a car not fully in Park, a worn key or worn wafers inside the ignition cylinder. Try the steering wheel and shifter first. If the key still will not turn, the cylinder or key needs attention.

Can a locksmith fix an ignition, or do I need a mechanic?

A locksmith handles the lock cylinder and keys, which is where sticking and stuck-key problems come from. A mechanic handles electrical faults such as the starter or the ignition switch.

Do I have to tow the car?

Usually not. We repair and replace ignition cylinders where the car is parked.

Will I need a new key after an ignition replacement?

Where the vehicle allows, we key the new cylinder to your existing key. If that is not possible, we cut and program new keys as part of the job.

How long does ignition repair take?

Many repairs take about an hour. Replacements and vehicles that need programming can take longer. We give you an estimate before starting.

Is it safe to keep driving with a sticking ignition?

It is a risk. A sticking ignition tends to fail completely without warning, often with the key stuck or broken inside. It is cheaper to fix early.
