What we do on a car lockout

We open the car without forcing anything. Depending on the vehicle, the technician uses an air wedge and long-reach tool to work the interior handle or unlock button, or picks the door lock directly.

Either way, the aim is the same: the door opens, nothing is bent or scratched, and the lock works exactly as it did before.

  • Keys locked in the car or left in the ignition
  • Keys locked in the trunk
  • Key fob inside a car that locked itself
  • A door that will not open because the fob battery died

Keys locked in the trunk

Trunk lockouts need a little more care. On many newer cars the trunk release is disabled when the car is locked, and some trunks cannot be reached from the cabin at all.

We open the cabin first, then use the interior release or the valet key path, depending on the model. Tell us the keys are in the trunk when you call so the technician brings the right tools.

What to do while you wait

  1. If a child or pet is inside, call 911 first. Do not wait for a locksmith in that situation.
  2. Move to a safe, lit spot if you are on a busy road or it is late.
  3. Check every door and the trunk. One is unlocked more often than you would think.
  4. Have your ID ready. We confirm the car is yours before we open it.
  5. Skip the coat hanger. On modern doors it mostly damages the seals and wiring.

More advice is in our guide on what to do when you are locked out.

Locked out, or is the key lost?

If the keys are inside the car, you need a lockout service and you will be driving again in minutes.

If the key is lost, broken or stolen, opening the door is only half of it. You need a new key cut and programmed, which we also do at the car. See car key replacement.

What a car lockout costs in DC

Car lockouts start at $125. You get the price on the phone before we dispatch, and that is the price you pay unless the job turns out to be something different, such as a lost key.

Be wary of ads promising a $19 or $29 lockout. That number is a hook, and the bill at the car is usually many times higher. Our price list shows real starting prices.

Car lockout FAQs

How fast can you get to me?

We typically reach most DC addresses within 20 to 30 minutes. Traffic and time of day affect that, so we give you an honest estimate when you call.

Will opening my car damage it?

No. We use tools made for vehicle entry that protect the paint, glass and weather stripping. We do not break windows or force locks.

Can you open any make and model?

We open the great majority of cars, trucks and SUVs on DC roads. Tell us the year, make and model and we will confirm before sending a technician.

Do I need to prove the car is mine?

Yes. We ask for a photo ID and something linking you to the vehicle, such as the registration. It protects every car owner, including you.

Does my insurance or roadside plan cover a lockout?

Some policies and roadside plans reimburse lockout service. We give you a receipt you can submit. Check your own plan for the details.

My key is in the car but the car will not unlock with the handle. Why?

On many keyless cars the fob has to be awake and in range of the right antenna. A weak fob battery is the usual cause. We can open the car and test the fob. See key fob replacement and programming.
