Key fob not working in Washington, DC? Mr. Locksmith DC tests the fob first, then repairs, re-pairs or replaces it and programs it to your vehicle on site. We work on remote fobs, remote head keys and push-to-start proximity fobs for most makes. Open every day, 6:30 a.m.–11:30 p.m. Call (202) 630-4979.
A key fob usually fails in stages. The range gets shorter, you press the button twice, and then one morning the doors stay locked. Sometimes the fix is a three-dollar battery. Sometimes the fob has lost its pairing with the car, or the electronics inside have worn out.
Mr. Locksmith DC diagnoses and fixes key fob problems across Washington, DC from a mobile van. We find out which of those it is before we sell you anything.

Is it the battery, the pairing or the fob itself?
These quick checks tell you a lot before you call.
- Works only up close: almost always a weak battery.
- Dashboard says “key not detected”: often a battery. Most push-to-start cars will still start if you hold the fob against the start button or a marked spot on the steering column.
- Spare fob works, this one does not: the fob has failed or lost its programming.
- Neither fob works: the problem may be in the car, not the fob.
- Buttons work but the car will not start: the immobilizer chip is not being read. That is a programming or chip issue.
If a fresh battery does not solve it, the fob needs testing with proper equipment.
Key fob replacement
When a fob is lost, cracked, water-damaged or simply worn out, we supply a compatible replacement and program it to your vehicle. That covers three common designs:
- Separate remote fobs that lock and unlock the doors alongside a regular key.
- Remote head and flip keys with the buttons built into the key.
- Smart and proximity fobs for push-to-start vehicles.
If the fob includes a key blade, we cut that too. If you have lost every key to the car, start with our car key replacement page, which covers making a key from scratch.
Key fob programming
A new fob does nothing until the car accepts it. Programming links the fob to your vehicle in two parts: the remote functions that lock and unlock the doors, and the immobilizer code that lets the engine start.
Some older vehicles can learn a remote through a sequence of key turns and button presses. Most newer ones need a programmer connected to the car’s diagnostic port. We carry that equipment in the van and program the fob where the car is parked.
While we are connected, we can usually remove lost fobs from the car’s memory, so a missing fob can no longer unlock or start the vehicle.
Can you program a fob bought online?
Sometimes. Aftermarket and used fobs are a gamble: the part number or frequency may be wrong for your car, and some used smart fobs are locked to their first vehicle and cannot be reused.
Call us with the year, make and model before you order. We will tell you what the car needs and whether we can program a fob you supply. It is a short call that can save you the cost of a fob that will never work.
What it costs
Price depends on the fob type and on how your vehicle is programmed. A basic remote costs far less than a proximity fob, and programming a fob you already own costs less than supplying one.
We quote a firm price by phone once we know the vehicle. For starting prices on other services, see our DC locksmith price list.
Key fob FAQs
How do I know if my key fob battery is dead?
Shorter range, needing several presses and a “key battery low” warning on the dash are the usual signs. Most fobs use a coin cell you can change yourself in a minute.
Does a key fob need reprogramming after a battery change?
Normally no. The pairing is stored in the fob and the car, not in the battery. If the fob stops working after a battery swap, it may need to be re-synced, which we can do.
Can a locksmith program a key fob, or only the dealer?
A locksmith with the right equipment can program fobs for most makes and models. A few vehicles need dealer-only tools, and we will tell you that before we dispatch.
How long does key fob programming take?
Often 20 to 40 minutes once the technician is with the car. Some systems have a built-in security wait that makes it longer.
I lost one fob. Should the other be reprogrammed?
It is a good idea. We can erase the lost fob from the vehicle and keep your remaining fob working, so whoever finds the lost one cannot use it.
Can I start my push-to-start car with a dead fob?
In most cars, yes. Hold the fob against the start button or the marked spot described in your owner’s manual and press start. The hidden blade inside the fob opens the door.
