How we open commercial doors
Commercial hardware is built tougher than house locks, but most of it can still be opened without damage by someone who knows it.
We pick or bypass storefront deadlocks, mortise locks and commercial levers where we can. Some high-security cylinders cannot be picked in a practical time. In that case we explain the options and the cost of a replacement cylinder before going further.
If the lock itself has failed, opening the door is only the first step. We can usually repair or replace it in the same visit so you can lock up that night.
Who can authorize entry
We need to know the person asking has the right to be let in. For a business that normally means one of these:
- The owner or a manager, with photo ID and something tying them to the business, such as a business card, license on the wall or company email.
- An employee, with confirmation from the owner or manager by phone.
- Building management, for a tenant’s suite in a managed building.
It takes a minute and it is the same check you would want us to make if someone else called about your door.
While you wait
- Call the other key holders and your building manager. A spare may be closer than you think.
- If you have an alarm, have the code or your alarm company’s number ready. Opening the door may trigger it.
- Do not force a glass storefront door. The glass and frame cost far more than a lockout call.
- Tell us if it is a keypad or card system, so the technician brings the right tools.
Stop it happening again
One lockout is bad luck. Two usually means too few keys or the wrong system.
- Extra keys held by a second manager, cut and labeled on the spot.
- A keypad lock on the staff entrance, so opening does not depend on one person’s key ring.
- A master key system so managers can open every door with one key.
- Access control if you want to grant and remove access without keys.
If the key is lost rather than left inside, the locks should be rekeyed. See commercial rekeying.
What a business lockout costs
Business lockouts start at $145. You get the price by phone before we dispatch. It changes only if the job does, for example a failed lock that needs replacing.

Commercial lockout FAQs
How quickly can you reach my business?
We typically reach most DC addresses within 20 to 30 minutes. Downtown traffic at rush hour can add to that, and we give you an honest estimate on the phone.
Can you open a glass storefront door without damage?
In most cases, yes. Storefront deadlocks can usually be picked or bypassed without touching the glass or frame.
Can an employee call you, or does it have to be the owner?
An employee can call. Before opening the door we confirm with the owner or a manager by phone.
Will opening the door set off the alarm?
It may, if the system is armed. Have your code ready or let your alarm company know a locksmith is on site.
Can you open a locked file cabinet or desk?
Yes. Most office furniture locks can be opened without damage and a new key made.
The lock is broken, not just locked. Can you fix it the same day?
Usually. We carry common commercial parts. See commercial lock installation and repair.
