Losing a car key in DC tends to happen at the worst spot: a metered space on 14th Street, a garage in Navy Yard, or the curb outside your own building. A modern key is also more than a piece of cut metal. It carries a chip the car has to recognize before the engine will start.

Mr. Locksmith DC handles car key replacement across Washington, DC from a mobile van. We cut the blade, program the chip or remote, and test everything in the car before we leave.

Which car keys we replace

The right replacement depends on what your vehicle was built with. These are the four types we see most often in the District.

Standard cut keys

Older vehicles use a plain metal key with no electronics. These are the quickest and least expensive to replace, and we can cut one from the lock itself if no original exists.

Transponder keys

Most cars built since the late 1990s use a transponder key. A small chip in the head sends a code to the immobilizer, and the engine only starts when the code matches. A replacement has to be cut and then programmed to your car.

Remote head keys and flip keys

These combine the blade, the chip and the lock/unlock buttons in one unit. We cut the blade, program the immobilizer chip and pair the remote buttons in the same visit.

Smart keys and push-to-start keys

Proximity keys stay in your pocket and let you start the car with a button. They need dedicated programming equipment, and most also hold a hidden emergency blade that we cut to match your door lock.

How transponder key programming works

Cutting the blade only gets the key to turn. For the engine to start, the chip in the key has to be registered with the car’s immobilizer. There are two ways to do that.

Cloning. When you still have a working key, its chip data can often be copied onto a new chip. It is quick and the car treats both keys as the same one.

Programming to the vehicle. A new, unique key is added to the car’s memory through the diagnostic port. This is the method used when all keys are lost, and it lets us delete missing keys at the same time.

Which one applies depends on the make, model and year. Some vehicles also require a security PIN or a waiting period, which is why programming times vary.

Lost car key replacement: what if you have no key at all?

You do not need an existing key for us to make a new one. When every key is gone, we work from the vehicle itself, using the VIN or the lock to get the correct cut, then program the new key to the car.

We can also remove the lost key from the car’s memory on most vehicles. That matters in a city: if the key was stolen or dropped near where you park, the old one will no longer start the engine.

Expect to show a photo ID and proof that the car is yours, such as the registration or title. Any legitimate locksmith will ask.

Car key duplication: get a spare before you need one

Copying a working key is faster and costs less than replacing a lost one, because we can read the existing key instead of starting from zero. If you are down to a single key, a spare is worth doing now.

We duplicate standard, transponder and remote keys at your home, office or parking spot. For house and office keys, see our key duplication service.

Mobile locksmith or dealership?

A dealership can replace any key for its own brand, but the car usually has to be there. With no working key, that means a tow, then waiting for a service appointment.

A mobile locksmith brings the cutting machine and programmer to the car. For most makes and models on DC streets, the job is finished where the car is parked. A small number of vehicles need dealer-only equipment, and we tell you that on the phone before sending anyone.

What car key replacement costs in DC

Car key replacement starts at $175. The price depends mainly on the key type: a transponder key costs less than a proximity key, and a duplicate costs less than a key made with no original.

Give us the year, make and model when you call and we will quote a firm price before we dispatch. Our full locksmith price list shows starting prices for every service.

How the visit works

  1. Call with your location and the year, make and model.
  2. We confirm we can do your vehicle and give you a price and an arrival estimate.
  3. The technician checks your ID and proof of ownership.
  4. The key is cut, programmed and tested in the ignition, the doors and the trunk.

Have the registration handy if you can. It speeds up the ownership check and gives us the VIN.

Car key replacement FAQs

Can you make a car key without the original?

Yes, for most vehicles. We cut the key from the VIN or the lock and program it to the car on site. You will need a photo ID and proof of ownership.

How long does car key replacement take?

Most keys are cut and programmed in under an hour once the technician arrives. All-keys-lost jobs and some push-to-start systems take longer. We give you an estimate when you call.

Do I have to tow my car to you?

No. We are a mobile service and work wherever the car is parked in Washington, DC, including garages and street parking.

Will my old key still work after you make a new one?

On most vehicles we can erase lost keys from the car’s memory during programming, so a missing key will no longer start the engine. Tell us when you call if the key was stolen.

Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealer for a car key?

Often, yes, and you avoid the tow. The gap varies by make and key type, so ask for our firm quote and compare it with your dealer.

My key works but the buttons do not. Do I need a new key?

Not always. It may be a battery, a worn button pad or a remote that needs re-pairing. See our key fob replacement and programming page.
